Dana Research Centre

The ideal base from which to conduct field research into biodiversity conservation.

The Dana Research Centre is situated at the edge of the Dana Nature Reserve in southern Jordan: one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the Kingdom. It was established to facilitate research into aspects of the reserve’s ecology and management which will help to shape conservation strategies and programmes.

The Centre consists of a self-contained laboratory within a larger complex of attractively designed stone buildings near to the ancient village of Dana. It contains , a computer, microscopes, simple field equipment and Dana's ecological database. It also contains the reserve’s herbarium, with  600 species represented, and a collection of reports and reference books.

     An invitation to do research

RSCN is keen to further develop the work of the Research Centre and it welcomes M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, as well as individual researchers and specialists, from Jordan or abroad, who would be interested in conducting applied research in the nature reserve.

A wide range of studies have been undertaken so far and details of these can be provided on request. Among the ongoing research activities are the monitoring of animal populations, water quality, soil erosion and forest regeneration; studies on the impact of tourists and continuing baseline studies on reptiles and butterflies.

Our preference is for all research proposals to support the reserves management priorities and we can provide a list of suggested research projects. We will, however, consider any individual research proposal that is compatible with our conservation objectives.
